I know that a John Webber born in Luxborough around 1779 left for London and became a successful Cheesemonger in Brewer Street London. Does anyone know of him and or his family? I am researching the family and trying to establish the Luxborough connection.

During the late 1940s and early 1950s there was an Alec Webber living in the village who was employed by the local County Council maintaining hedgerows and roads. This person would have been in his thirties, we have no other details for him and cannot confirm whether he has any connection to your family research

Thanks for the reply, though I am not sure that this takes me anywhere, as Webber seems to have been a common name in Luxborough and the surrounding villages, in the late 1700's.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Webber is an exceedingly common name in the area so this could be very difficult. There was a Walt Webber living in Churchtown who died about 20 years ago but maybe someone in the village will know more about the family. It might be worth contacting the Public Records Office in Taunton or perhaps looking up births, deaths & marriages.

Thanks for the reply. I do know that my John Webber came from Luxborough, as this is reflected on the Census records. I also know that he was a Cheesemaker, from the same source. I contacted this website, in the hope that there might be a relative, who knew something about the history of the family, who could add to my knowledge.

Bill

I am not aware of any Webbers extant in Luxborough although there are many in the Wheddon Cross area. However I will point out your post to a neighbour who might have more info - when she returns from holiday.

I don't know if the Wheddon Cross village web site has a contact who might help - it is more tourism-related than ours but there are several branches of Webbers there, including with the garage/shop and a farmer who is a local councillor.

Hi, The Webber the lived in Luxborough had a daughter that unfortunately died in a Mental Hospital that has now closed. It was called Tone Vale, she had no children as she had been this since her teenage years. His wife has a nephew that lives in Brendon and is called John Floyd. I do not know if he will be able to help you. Kathleen Scott
